Lisens Okra

Lisens Okra, the ochre Lisen, carries the language of Lisen & Selma and Lisen & Gösta forward into a register of warmer, deeper colour. The fleur is held small and disciplined, in the tradition of nineteenth-century semé papers used as quiet companions in libraries, drawing rooms, and the studies of those who lived among books. The ground sits in the ochre family found in painted manor interiors from Skogaholm to Svindersvik, a yellow that has weathered into something dustier and more considered than fresh pigment ever was. The motif is not printed in ink. It is pressed into the paper as a blind impression, the kind of mark a bookbinder leaves when a wooden block strikes a cover without foil or pigment, the figure read through shadow and raised edge alone. What gives the paper its life is what reveals itself slowly: every fleur has been drawn individually, no two are identical, and across a full wall the figures are arranged so that the same neighbours never appear twice. The pattern rhymes rather than repeats. Read closely, no surface is exactly like any other. Read at a distance, the wall holds its quiet rhythm. The paper draws on the long lineage of disciplined small-scale ornament, the work of Lewis F. Day, Christopher Dresser, and Owen Jones in England, the dignified semé traditions of the French ateliers, the blind-tooled bindings of Northern European bookbinders.
