Stages of Water Lily
A water lily rises from root to open flower in dulled bronze on deep pond green, an Art Nouveau stripe with a Swedish Jugend temperament. The ground reads as limewashed wall while the motifs carry the softened edges and uneven take of a hand block impression, echoing the green and bronze rooms of the 1890s. Small in scale, with slender columns set a hand width apart in a half-drop repeat.

Color palette
Two pond greens sit close in value and read as one body of water, cool and quiet. Against them stands a single dulled bronze tone, greenish rather than yellow, with paler and deeper notes where the colour gathers and thins. The pairing is warm against cool in the manner of the period, underglaze greens from the Swedish porcelain works beside the bronze tones of the sekelskifte dining room. Under warm evening light the green holds and the bronze glows.
The ground resembles a limewashed wall, matte and chalky, with a slow cloud of tone that drifts over a hand width rather than a grain. The motifs sit on it like an impression from a block: coverage densest in the broad petals and pads, thinning in the hairlines, edges softening as if the colour had been pressed rather than drawn. Inside the forms, crisp lines of the ground remain open, veins, stamens and stem lines, sharper than the outer contours. The whole evokes hand block printing in one colour on a distempered ground.
