DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Atmosphere through subtle variation, visual texture & historical grounding

The right wallpaper does something for a room before you understand why, it changes the mood. You feel it the moment you walk in.

Our starting point is that our wallpapers should change and improve the atmosphere of a room. Whether a 'simple' stencil or a complex leaf composition. Not pattern as decoration, but wallpaper for atmosphere.

We work towards it through three paths. Visual texture, subtle variation, and anchoring our choices in history.

What creates atmosphere?

So what creates atmosphere? Subtle variation makes a room feel alive: no two pattern repeats exactly the same. A sense of depth, of passes and layers on something that is not flat. Considered patterns working in concert with the qualities of the paper itself.

And who succeeded at this? The designers and wallpaper makers of the past. The masters shaped, created and refined visual languages in concert with the printing methods and media at their disposal. The wooden block had attributes, and imposed constraints, that painting by hand did not: a relief effect, less complexity in the pattern, a different palette. Rollers came with attributes of their own. Textures create different depths, and depth builds atmosphere.

Our philosophy at Linlava is about capturing this. By working to understand the attributes of printing methods, textures and visual languages, we create

  • visual textures,
  • patterns with historical grounding,
  • and repeats with subtle variation.

The birds have subtle variations. The beak, feathers. Comb.

In our process, we first live with the constraints of the traditional methods, then shift to experimenting with how to move beyond them. Digitally, we build blocks and simulate printing pressure, ink load, and how the block meets and changes the texture beneath it. Only when the foundation holds do we step outside it. Where the wallpaper makers were bound to the same three blocks, at Linlava we vary them digitally for every repeat. No two tulips are alike; every bird differs subtly in beak, crest, feathers. Same rhythm, different character.

Tradition, with the freedom to break

Our wallpapers are not reproduction. Rather than breaking with tradition, we build on it, free to cross eras, styles and textures in ways the wallpaper makers of the past never could. We build digital tools to capture the best of what came before, and we use those same tools to amplify, alter and experiment. All of it in service of elevating rooms' atmosphere with our wallpaper.

One paper. No compromise

Our paper is thick, matt and textured. It brings a life of its own and reinforces the work we put into visual texture and depth. Every sample we send is on the same paper, printed in the right scale.
